National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts, Bulgaria

In 2018, the National Academy for Theater and Film Arts (NATFA) “Krastyo Sarafov” celebrated its 70th anniversary. It started as a two-year school of theatre at the National Theater “Ivan Vazov” and in 1948 developed into the first Bulgarian State Higher School of Theater.

The academy is continuously expanding, updating and enriching its activities. Today it offers to its students a wide range of subjects and programs, some of which are unique for Bulgaria and can only be studied at NATFA. The academic staff of NATFA includes highly qualified professionals with strong creative and pedagogical experience. The process of applying theory to professional practice is essential to our educational philosophy. The graduates of NATFA acquire a wide range of creative, critical, performing and productive skills and qualifications. Many of them build rewarding careers in Bulgaria and abroad.

The documents for acquired professional qualification issued by NATFA are recognized both in Bulgaria and abroad, in accordance with all of the conventions concluded by the State.

NATFA establishes itself as a unique educational, creative and scientific center of high national and international recognition. Indicative is the steady interest to the subjects taught at NATFA in a highly competitive market of educational services.

International co-operation at all levels of academic and artistic exchange has always been among the top priorities of NATFA. The outstanding achievements of academy’s graduates are recognized through yearly participation in many national and international students’ and professional festivals, workshops, seminars, congresses, conferences and symposia. NAFTA is actively engaged in many international projects in the field of theatre and film arts. Since 1982, the academy is a full member of CILECT (Centre International de Liason des Ecoles de Cinema et de Television), since 1990 it is a full member of ELIA (The European League of Institutes of the Arts). Since 2008, NATFA is a founding member of ITI (The UNESCO International Theatre Institute). It has established long-term contacts with universities and art academies all over the world. We are an active partner in projects developed through ERASMUS, TEMPUS, SOCRATES and other educational programs.

The educational philosophy of the National Academy for Theater and Film Arts is based on cultural pluralism and the democratic values of the civil society. The Academy follows a policy of non-discrimination on the basis of race, religion, ethnic and other elements, as well as on basis of disability and diseases, as long as the latter are not contraindicative for the study of a subject.
